Updated Crash Course to Playing World of Warcraft

Whether you're new to World of Warcraft Battle for Azeroth or are returning for World of Warcraft Classic after a long hiatus, this crash course will help you survive.

There are dozens of forums, websites and Youtube videos dedicated to World of Warcraft. And yet, most of them don't answer some very simple questions. Oftentimes, you're forced to sift through tons of data not relevant to what you're looking for, having to listen to someone explain something horribly. And don't get me started on the craptacularly (that's my word), hideous music in the background. Here's where Ge'NeL comes to the rescue! We've created this WoW guide to answer recurring questions asked in the Women of Warcraft Facebook group and all across the internet world....of Warcraft.

WHERE TO START

First things first, you have to decide which type of realm is best for you: player versus player (pvp), player versus environment or role playing versus player.

  • PvP is exactly how it sounds. It's faction player against opposing faction player in addition to NPCs. Outside of major cities, the potential to be killed by another player is pretty high. Some people even find joy in terrorizing low level areas. While it may be annoying, it comes with the territory.

  • PvE realms are relegated to environmental gameplay. While pvp is still an option on pve realms, it requires being in a battleground or arena or turning pvp settings on.

  • RPvP is a bit different. It's role-playing! You interact with other players as if you are an NPC or you can create a background for your character. Almost anything goes, including ERP (erotic role-playing). If that's what you're into (not gonna knock it--you do you, boo-boo) then you can get started in Goldshire.

Which faction is better? Horde or Alliance?

Before someone attempts to fill your head with nonsense, let's get this out of the way first. One faction is not better than the other. They banded together for different reasons. That being said, different races have special abilities based on their race. You can click on the particular race then the "More Info" button below the races to see which abilities they have.

After you've decided which faction, race and class you want to play.

MAKING FRIENDS

Some people are content to play WoW alone. And that's okay. Some people enjoy solitude and want to play at their own pace. WoW, in itself, is a very social game where many objectives require playing with others. It really does help to have a friend or two to quest with. But making friends in Azeroth isn't always easy.

  • Join a guild. Joining a guild is the fastest way to meet new people. Talk in guild chat and gauge how people communicate with each other. Do not assume everyone's humor is the same as yours. Not everyone fancies dark humor. Needless to say, your first interaction with someone shouldn't be "Sup bitch" or anything of the like that shouldn't be the first thing you say to someone. Also, remember that a lot gets lost in translation via text communications. So be mindful of how you communicate with others and also how they communicate with you.

  • Create your own guild. By creating your own guild you can create the type of environment that you want to be a part of. Invite people you've interacted with who you feel would fit into the virtual home you've created.

  • Enter random dungeons and battlegrounds. Not only is doing dungeons and BGs a good way to learn to play your class better, but also a pretty decent way of meeting other players. And if you're good, it's likely people will give you kudos and want to play with you again.

  • Don't beg for gold. If there's one thing worse than gold sellers spamming trade chat, it's gold beggars. They are annoying. We know that newcomers need gold. But it's frustrating that people put a lot of time and effort into their characters to make gold, save up for repairs, etc. just for someone to come in and start off with "Hi. Can I have a few gold to guy a piece of gear from the Auction House?" No, bruh. I feel for you, but you have to make it the way most of us did. This guide will show you how to do that, too!

DUNGEON ETIQUETTE

Azeroth has enough bad apples to go around. There will always be abominable twats who think that hiding behind a computer screen gives them a free pass to treat others like total crap, waste people's time, pick on others because of their playstyle, etc. This guide is to help you to not be one of those guys or gals. Here are a few do's and don'ts to help make Azeroth a better world--of warcraft.

  • Don't be afraid to ask questions. If you're new or it's been a while, speak up. "Hey guys! This is my first time here. Anything I should know about this boss?" People generally appreciate when someone can ask for help.

  • Be open to constructive criticism. It's not easy being told or made to feel as if you suck. Some people seriously do not have tact when talking to others. That's still no reason for anyone to treat you or anyone else like crap. But do try to be open to advice from those who do try to help you by sharing a few pointers or tips.

  • Don't need on every item that drops. In addition to your race-based special abilities, the character creation page also tells you which type of armor your class wears. For example: You're a druid in a dungeon with five other blokes. A piece of cloth drops. The priest wears cloth. You need on the item because you might be able to wear it. Don't do that! Druid's primary armor is leather. Priest's primary armor is cloth. Be courteous and ask if they need it before hitting need. Another example: You're a big, strong warrior in a dungeon. An intellect trinket drops. You hit need. WRONG! Warrior's primary stat is strength. Warriors do not need intellect for anything whatsoever.

  • Do try to have patience for other players. Healers need mana. Tanks sometimes like to wait on their cooldowns or certain abilities before pulling. Someone's kid may decide to play Whack-A-Mole with mommy or daddy's keyboard. Someone's cat may decide that their keyboard is now their bed. Stuff happens. Life happens. Be patient. It will be okay. I promise.

HOW TO MAKE WoW GOLD

Being new to WoW or making a new toon on a new server and not having enough money to repair your gear, buy gear or buy supplies really sucks. Wowhead has an excellent Gold Making Guide. There are so many ways to make gold. Here are a few ways to ensure you stack your paper (gold) quickly.

  • Loot everything. Yes, loot everything, even the grey items. Vendor them. The copper and silver add up.

  • Sell green (common) armor on the AH. It doesn't matter how low the item level of the gear is, it will likely sell on the auction house. Dirtydianna and Thickyvicky have found some amazing, low level green items for transmogs.

  • Choose a gathering profession. Leather, ore and herbs always sell on the auction house. Always.

  • Collect cloth. Cloth is yet another big seller on the auction house. Especially low-level cloth. In Retail WoW, Netherweave cloth continues to be the biggest seller on the AH, probably because Netherweave bags are easy to make and they sell very well, especially to low level players looking for more than the 4, 6 and 8 slot bags that they get while questing.

WARNING: purchasing gold from third-party sites is against Blizzard’s Terms of Service and, when they do shutdown the company selling gold, if your account is among their list of clients, your account will be permanently banned. Do not fall prey to the little level 1 characters offering to sell you World of Warcraft gold for cheap.

NOTE: As it stands, you cannot sell a WoW token on the Classic Auction House.

WORLD OF WARCRAFT ADDONS: THE BASICS

Addons are not for everyone. Some people prefer to play with just the game UI and that is perfectly okay. But some of us use addons to enhance game play and in-game experiences. Here are a few basic addons, if you are interested, that may help you navigate your way through Azeroth.

First, download the Twitch Desktop App. It's all encompassing since they partnered with Curse to include addons. On the Twitch app, click Mods to take you where you want to go. Then select World of Warcraft to take you to addons for WoW. Clicking on the name of an addon will give you detailed information about what that addon does.

  • HandyNotes for questing is amazing!

  • BigWigs or Deadly Boss Mods for when you decide to venture into dungeons and raids.

  • Decursive is particularly helpful in dungeons, raids and battlegrounds. It's a mouseover addon that allows you to quickly removes harmful magic, poisons and diseases from your party or raid members if your class has the ability to remove them.

  • Details! Damage Meter, Recount or Skada damage meters. These are very handy to help keep track of damage, healing, absorbs, deaths and other actions. Details not only displays the damage and healing stats from your party or raid, but also functions as a way to help you improve your game play. For example, as a healer, both you and another player have the same specialization, similar gear and item level, but he/she is putting out more HPS than you. A number of things could factor into why your heals are lower. With Details, you can mouseover that person's name and it will show you what their top heals are. The same with damage.

Overwatch's The Queen of Junkertown Fan Concept by Chamachine is Spot On

Fan-made concept art, Junker Queen makes us want Blizzard to make this happen now!

Poster in Junkertown of the Queen

Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch is one of the most popular and influential FPS games to date. They’ve created dynamic, interesting, and fun characters with rich back stories that draw you into the game even more.

Chamachine, a talented graphic designer, created a Developer Update introducing The Queen of Junkertown inspired by Overwatch concept art of Junkertown. Chamachine worked with Leslie Van den Broeck to help with rendering. Van den Broeck has created remarkable Heroes of the Storm art. The sheer talent has me in awe!

He shows how he went through to create the concept, taking inspiration from Hammond’s Junkertown skin with the mohawk, Roadhog’s spiked shoulders. Her tee shirt is also a bit reminiscent of Roadhog’s belly. We’ll be following Chamachine to see if he comes up with more Overwatch skins for The Queen.

Too bad this isn’t a real Overwatch developer update. The Queen looks as if she would be a dps hero. The Queen has grenades strapped to her arm and armor made from, what looks to be Zenyatta-like Omnic scraps. She would no doubt be bad ass. While it would be highly likely that she would be a dps class, The Queen of Junkertown could also be an off-tank similar to Roadhog.

Either way, this concept art is a masterpiece, introducing us to an Overwatch hero we didn’t know we needed but now we really need this to happen. What do you think about this concept art?

World of Warcraft Battle for Azeroth - Sylvanas Windrunner is the Leader Horde Has Needed for a Long Time

Cinematic still from World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth

Cinematic still from World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth

People just don’t understand what war actually is. They think war is all about treaties, peace, and being honorable. It’s not. It’s about much more.

The way Sylvanas Windrunner has been written in the Battle for Azeroth expansion has been murky at best. But the evidence of her greatness, whether people want to see it or not, is there for all to see. How Sylvanas has been treated, her past experiences shape her controversial decision-making in war today. Let’s explore.

The Many Tastes of Betrayal

Ever since she regained her freedom from Ner’Zhul, she has been betrayed by those she trusted.

  • Betrayal by Humans and subsequently, The Alliance. Though the Undead, under Sylvanas’ leadership, did not attempt to join the join the Alliance, they were met with much hostility after they were freed from The Lich King’s control. They were seen as abominations and “untrustworthy” and their lands constantly being encroached on. They were “foresaken” by the living.

Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: So, it is done.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: I had not dared to trust my senses - too many times has the Lich King made me to be a fool.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: Finally, he has been made to pay for the atrocities he imposed upon my people.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: May Azeroth never fail to remember the terrible price we paid for our weakness... for our pride.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: But what now, hero? What of those freed from his grasp, but still shackled to their mortal coils?
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: Leave me.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: I have much to ponder.
world of warcraft wrath of the lich king.gif
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: Now the Lich King is dead and we have returned.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: The people who called this land their home in life, do so in death as well.
Lady Sylvanas Windrunner says: But the Alliance does not recognize our rights. They claim this land as their own while attempting to invalidate the claims of the founders of this kingdom.
  • Betrayal by Varimathras and Putress. Though Sylvanas and Varimathras were begrudgingly allies, Varimathras recruited Foresaken in Undercity, driving a wedge between Sylvanas and those loyal to her. And at Wrathgate, likely acting on Varimathras’ orders, Apothecary Putress unleashes the blight onto both Horde and Alliance, killing Bolvar Fordragon in the process.

  • Betrayal by her sister, Vereesa Windrunner. During the trial of Garrosh Hellscream at The Temple of the White Tiger, Vereesa noticed how much her sister, Sylvanas, loathed Garrosh. She set up a meeting with Sylvanas and they plotted to poison Garrosh. But at the last minute, Vereesa chickened out and confessed their plans to Prince Anduin Wrynn.

  • Betrayal by Godfrey. After committing suicide because he’d rather die than have a worgen for a king (Genn Greymane), Sylvanas had her valkyr resurrect him as one of her Foresaken. Sylvanas commanded him to kidnap Lorna Crowley to hold her for ransom in hopes for a cease fire between the Gilneas Liberation Front and the Forsaken. But Godfrey wanted to kill Lorna and bring her back as a Forsaken to exact revenge on her father, Darius Crowley, one of King Genn Greymane’s right-hand men and leader of the Gilneas Liberation Front. When Darius surrendered to Sylvannas, Godfrey shot and killed her (Sylvanas). Her valkyr were quick to resurrect her.

Reasoning Behind Questionable Actions

While it many will argue that Sylvanas is self-serving, one thing that has remained constant throughout the lore is that Sylvanas is a protector—the protector of the Forsaken. And now, the Horde.

In Edge of Night, Sylvanas threw herself off of the icy cliffs of Icecrown Citadel after the defeat of The Lich King. Lingering in purgatory, she saw a vision of her peoples' future. Without her, then Warchief Garrosh Hellscream would sacrifice the Forsaken, Sylvanas’ people, in a failed assault on Gilneas.

“But you can’t just send them right into the central breach in the wall,” Lydon continued. “It’s a… a chokepoint. Well fortified, closely watched. Heavy armored troops on horseback couldn’t maneuver through the breach: they’d be mown down by musketfire from the debris. Surely you can see—“

”Of course I see!” Garrosh answered. “The door is wedged open; now it must be kicked down. This is what your kind is good for.”

Where is the Dark Lady, Sylvanas? [Lydon] wondered, turning his empty eye sockets toward the gray heavens. Why isn’t she here to counter this beast?
— Edge of Night

She stood up to Garrosh Hellscream when others couldn’t. And she put fear in him.

At that moment, nobody dared look Sylvanas Windrunner in the eye. Nobody but Garrosh Hellscream.

…there was fear in those eyes, but also something else. Something that terrified even the great warchief. His wolf began to edge away instinctively.

Warchief Sylvanas.jpg

Sylvanas is a brilliant and patient war tactician.

She knows that peace between the Horde and Alliance is always short-lived. Her exchange with High Overlord, Varok Saurfang in A Good War offers the explanation of why she burned The World Tree. People like to think that she threw a tantrum, but this was part of her plan that she mapped out with Saurfang.

“If I dedicated myself to peace with the Alliance, would it last a year?”

“Yes,” Saurfang said curtly.

“How about two years? Five? Ten? Fifty?”

Saurfang felt the trap closing in on him, and he did not like it. “We fought side‐by‐side against the Burning Legion. That creates bonds that are not easily broken.”

“Time breaks every bond.” Sylvanas leaned across the table. Her words flew like arrows. “What do you believe? Will peace last five years or fifty?

Both the Horde and Alliance navies were at minimum capacity. Sylvanas effectively divided the Alliance forces and Horde now controls all of Kalimdor, something that has never been achieved. With the razing of Teldrasil, the Alliance is in a political crisis, orchestrated by Sylvanas.

What happens when Genn Greymane, Malfurion Stormrage, and Tyrande Whisperwind all demand differing actions? He is not a high king like his father. The respect the others give him is a courtesy, not an obligation. Anduin Wrynn will rapidly become a leader who cannot act. If the Alliance will not march as one, each nation will act in its own interest. Each army will return home to protect their lands from us.”

“And that is how you defeat Stormwind.” Saurfang was in awe. It was brilliant.”

“We need to frighten them before we arrive here. If they decide to fight instead of run, the final step of this battle will be messier than all the rest,” she said. “What can we do to make the civilians of Teldrassil so afraid they can think of nothing but running?”
— A Good War

Sylvanas has never been naive about what the Horde and others think about her, ever since she was turned into the Undead Banshee Queen, no one has trusted her and that’s largely due in part to those who have betrayed her. She has sacrificed herself time and time again for her people, but critics cannot grasp the complexity of her character or decisions. They don’t understand that Warchief Sylvanas is playing the long game to secure the future of the Horde and peace will be on her terms, not Alliance because peace on the Alliance’s terms has always been flimsy and fragile. Horde has needed a leader who will let the Alliance know that Horde isn’t playing the same game they’ve been playing for hundreds of years.

What if…

Since Sylvanas predicted the behaviors of the Alliance leaders, what if Saurfang, Baine Bloodhoof, and Lore’thmar’s betrayal were also calculated? What if their betrayals were planned for? It’s not that far-fetched. Remember, Sylvanas and Saurfang had already planted the seeds of "Horde dissent" among the Alliance spies. We know she’s using Mathias Shaw and his spies to play Anduin. What if they played King Anduin, allowing Saurfang to be captured, knowing Anduin would release Saurfang? While it’s highly unlikely that Saurfang was in on it, it’s incredibly likely that Sylvanas planned for their betrayal.

Whatever your thoughts on Sylvanas Windrunner — love her, hate her, or you’re on the fence — the story surrounding her in Battle for Azeroth is far from over. We don’t know what Blizzard has planned for her, but we’re excited nonetheless.

Special shout out to my favorite World of Warcraft historian and queen of WarcraftMemes, Katalyst Evrmeme for always being up for talking World of Warcraft lore with me.

There's So Much Beauty in the World of Warcraft

We’re in World of Warcraft’s 15th anniversary. World of Warcraft Classic release date is Tuesday, August 27, 2019, and players who quit WoW are coming back just for Classic WoW. People who have played WoW since Vanilla are on the World of Warcraft forums reminiscing about the good ‘ol days of being brutally murdered by Murlocs in Elwynn Forest, among other things.

Those Murlocs, at the lake… That have like a 2 sec respawn and aggro with a mob of like 5-6 at a time…Died so many times to them…

Old school Azeroth can be a pretty scary and intimidating place. But There are so many beautiful places in Azeroth. All it takes is some exploring.

Just be careful. Unlike later expansions, there is no flying in Classic WoW. The best tip for surviving Classic Azeroth is to do your best to stick to the roads when traveling. This is especially helpful if you will be playing a Night Elf and decide to make the journey from Teldrasil on Kalimdor to Stormwind City in Eastern Kingdoms. For some reason, many, if not most Alliance players who choose Night Elf characters, prefer to quest in Eastern Kingdoms. So, keep in mind that there are there are no portals and there is no boat that goes directly from Darkshore to Stormwind. The Darkshore boat takes you to Wetlands in Eastern Kingdoms. Then, you have to walk on foot, to Ironforge. Be sure to learn the flight paths of each town you visit on your way. Once you get to Ironforge, you’ll take the tram to Stormwind. Yes, this is how you get from the Night Elf starting area to the Stormwind.

But yes, there are so many beautifully scenic places to explore in World of Warcraft. With each of the World of Warcraft expansions, Blizzard Entertainment’s talented team created some of the eeriest, creepiest and beautiful places in all of gaming.

The latest WoW expansion, Battle for Azeroth, also boasts some gorgeous scenery. Whether you have warmode on or not, exploring some of these places is an absolute must. From the Zandalari troll home of Zulduzar to Queen Azshara’s underwater domain of Nazjatar, these places are stunning. There are very few games like World of Warcraft that would be able to compare visually.

Whether you will be playing World of Warcraft Classic, sticking to Battle for Azeroth, or will be playing both, don’t forget to appreciate the scenery. Do you have a favorite place to chill in Azeroth? Tell us your favorite places in the comments or on Facebook.

Update: New Overwatch Archives: Storm Rising Skin - Scientist Moira

Overwatch Archive Unlocked Skins.png

Science will reveal the truth!

Moira is a brilliant scientist, but all of her skins look the same, just different colors, with the exception of Blackwatch and the Halloween Banshee skin. I was hoping for something a bit more imaginative.

The Play Overwatch site also shows that there are 7, (6 now that Moira’s skin has been revealed) more skins to be unlocked. Who could they be for?

From original article.

We know that Overwatch skins help to tell the story of the heroes (and villains) we play. And Baptiste was one of Talon’s best combat medics until he went AWOL. He had originally joined Talon as a means to an end, but soon grew tired of being witness to and participating in their evil deeds. So he chucked the deuces and disappeared, until he was tracked down in Port-au-Prince, Haiti by his former team.

So, I’m hoping Orisa gets a new skin. She recently received a new skin, but compared to her counterparts, she’s lacking in the skins department. I’d also like to see a kind of sexy Mei skin. Thick girls are sexy too, dammit! And no, sexy does NOT have to equal revealing. But something less frumpy.

We’ll keep you updated on the new skin reveals as the come. Who else do you think will get a new skin this event?

Update: New Overwatch Archives: Storm Rising Skin - Circus Junkrat

Overwatch Archive Unlocked Skins.png

This Circus skin is perfect for causing mayhem!

Junkrat gets to have all the fun when it comes to Overwatch skins. This new skin is no different. I find myself needing this skin badly.

The Play Overwatch site also shows that there are 7 more skins to be unlocked. Who could they be for?

New Overwatch Skin: Talon Baptiste

This is probably one of the least surprising new skin reveals, but still cool nonetheless…

You cannot release a new hero and former Talon agent just before Overwatch Archive: Storm Rising and NOT give them a new skin for the Archive event. So yeah, we knew this skin was coming this batch.Still, Bae-tiste Baptiste looks pretty dope.

Update: There's a Storm Brewing in Overwatch Archives: Storm Rising Named Maximilien

Update: There's a Storm Brewing in Overwatch Archives: Storm Rising Named Maximilien

Update: We have a closer look at Maximilien.

Blizzard released another teaser giving us a closer look at Maximilien. The Overwatch strike team is surveiling the streets of Havana looking for Doomfist’s accountant, Maximilien.

There's a Storm Brewing in Overwatch Archives: Storm Rising

overwatch-storm-rising-logo.jpg

Blizzard released the teaser, Overwatch Archives: Storm Rising that will feature the Overwatch strike team of Mercy, Winston, and Genji with Tracer leading the team.

While accessing the latest archived file we find a transmission for Commander Morrison from an Overwatch operative known only as Sojourn at the moment.

Commander Morrison, I have a proposal. We’re going at catching Doomfist the wrong way. He’s clean. But his accountant, Maximilien? Follow the money and you’ll find the dirt you need.
— Sojourn

Here’s what we know so far. The strike team will be going after Maximilien, a member of Talon’s inner circle. The recording says that Maximilien is Doomfist’s accountant. And we know that Maximilien is a wealthy omnic who owns a casino in Monaco.

This could be related to property in Havana being bought up by a foreign entity. We assumed the foreign entity was Talon, which looks to be correct. Maximilien must be the one buying up all of the property in Havana, possibly using the rum company to launder money and the port, also mentioned in the Havana Sun newspaper, to ship something other than rum.

As a hurricane approaches Havana, we believe this is where the Archives event will take place. The title “Storm Rising” could be reference to, not only the impending storm, but the hunt for Maximilien as well as putting the strike team to the test.

I know you’re worried about sending the strike team out again after what happened with Reinhardt…I’m putting Tracer in charge…she’s grown as a leader since the King’s Row mission and I know you’ll agree.
— Sojourn

A storm is definitely on its way to the Caribbean. We still don’t have all of the details about Overwatch Archives: Storm Rising, but Blizzard will release more soon enough. They love to keep fans on the edges of their seats. Surely, the days leading up to the release of the event will be filled with new skins and more teaser info.

The Overwatch Archives: Storm Rising events will be from April 16 to May 6. Are you excited for Archives 2019?
